New Commission Info

Thu May 21, 2009, 2:36 PM
Hello, everyone!

First off, I'd like to say thank you to all my watchers and everyone who has favorited my work. I very much appreciate every one, even if I can't always tell everyone individually.

Secondly, I'd like to thank all those who have commissioned me. I'm very happy for the opportunity to be able to do commissions as my main (and only) source of income.

Which brings me to the main point of this journal. As unfortunate as it is, it has recently become quite apparent that I will not be able to continue doing commissions as I have been so far this year. At the rate I have been going, I've been having a lot of trouble just paying my monthly expenses, even with my student loans on forebearance. I need to make a change, and at present I'm not exactly sure how it's going to turn out.

It is apparent that I need either to raise my prices, lower the quality of my work, or get a job elsewhere and close commissions altogether. As for lowering the quality of my work, that is something that I will never do. I also want to avoid getting another job at all costs, because I know that not only will I close commissions, but it will be much more difficult for me to find time to do even my own projects. So, I am going to raise my prices.

This is just a trial thing, to see if I still get business even with the raised commission prices. I will still finish all those commissions that I have already slotted in at the old prices, and if I do not have any business after that point, I will most likely close commissions until further notice. As dirty as I feel for doing this just for the sake of making more money, it is at this point a necessity, and if I can't make a living doing commissions I will have to try to make a living doing something else.

First off, I'm going to be getting rid of the cheaper lineart/base colors commissions. Nobody buys them anyway.

Secondly, for illustrations. Generally, these have been taking me on the order of 8 to 10 hours for single character pieces, and even then I generally feel like they are a little rushed at that point. That's $4-5 an hour, and I can't keep that up. The base price for illustrations is now going o be $100. Each additional character is $50. This is quite a bit more expensive than I have been doing these for, but like I said, I just feel that most of the illustrations that I complete feel rushed to me. I would like to be able to have more of an ability to really take my time with these illustrations and make them more worthy for my gallery, and I can't really see any other way to do that than to charge more for them.

And now for the big one; the reference sheets. Generally, these have been taking me 10-15 hours on the 3-pose sheets, and even more on the larger ones, so that's basically equal to $3-5 an hour. I set these prices before I really understood just how much work goes into these things, and with them being as popular as they are, I need to change them up. From now on, the first pose is going to be $50 (replacing the full character/no BG). After that, each additional pose will be $25, and the busts or any other closeup shots are $15 each, but I will throw in a free bust/closeup with 3 poses. So, that would mean that a 3-pose sheet with a bust would end up being $100.

Badges are now going to be $25.

Finally, I am now going to ask that 1/2 of the payment is made after the sketch is approved, and the other half after the project is completed. I will make sure to go over this during the commission itself, but once the sketch is approved, I will not make any additional changes to the proportions of the characters (height, weight, build, size of ears, etc). It is easy to change proportions during the sketch, but much harder as the project progresses. I will still make minor changes during the inking phase, but the overall proportions will be final.

I realise that I am asking quite a lot more for my work, but the truth is, I feel like my art and my time are worth more than I've been charging for them. I need to be able to make a living, and these changes are a necessity for me.

Thanks for your time, everyone who reads this.

So, without further ado:
